Abdülkerim Bardakcı, a candidate for the 2021 parliamentary elections in Turkey, has been removed from the candidate list due to a controversial tweet he posted previously.

Bardakcı, who was running for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), faced backlash after a tweet resurfaced in which he referred to women who wear headscarves as “hypocrites”.

The tweet, which was posted in 2013, read: “I reject those women who wear headscarves but do not live by Islamic morality as hypocrites in the eyes of Allah.”

The comments sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for Bardakcı’s removal from the party’s candidate list.

In response to the controversy, the AKP released a statement saying that Bardakcı’s comments did not reflect the party’s values and that he had been removed from the candidate list.

“The views expressed by Abdülkerim Bardakcı are not compatible with the AKP’s principles and values. Therefore, we have decided to remove him from the candidate list immediately,” the statement read.

The decision to remove Bardakcı from the candidate list has been applauded by many, including women’s rights groups who have long been fighting for the right to wear headscarves without being judged or discriminated against.

However, some AKP supporters have criticized the decision, calling it a betrayal of the party’s conservative values.

Despite the controversy, the AKP remains determined to secure a majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The party has already faced several challenges this year, including a split with former ally, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), and mounting public dissatisfaction with the economy and the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The removal of Bardakcı from the candidate list is just the latest in a series of setbacks for the AKP, and it remains to be seen how these challenges will impact the party’s chances at the polls. However, with the election just a few weeks away, it is clear that the party is facing a tough fight to retain its grip on power.
