ABD, Belarus muhalefetine desteğini yineledi

Beyaz Saray’dan yapılan yazılı açıklamada, ABD Ulusal Güvenlik Danışmanı Jake Sullivan’ın 27 Mart’ta Belaruslu muhalif lider Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya ile görüştüğü bildirildi.
Açıklamada, Sullivan’ın görüşmede, ABD’nin Belarus halkının “özgür ve adil seçimler, insan haklarının korunması gibi egemen ve demokratik gelecek arayışına” verdiği desteğin altını çizdiği belirtildi.
Sullivan’ın, ABD’nin müttefikleri ve ortaklarıyla Belarus Cumhurbaşkanı Lukaşenko liderliğindeki yönetimi eylemlerinden sorumlu tutmaya devam edeceğini tasdik ettiği aktarılan açıklamada, şunlar kaydedildi:
“(Taraflar) Rejimin demokrasi yanlısı harekete karşı devam eden baskılarına, 1400’den fazla siyasi mahkumun devam eden tutukluluğu dahil alenen işlediği insan hakları ihlallerine ve Rusya’nın Ukrayna’ya karşı savaşındaki yardımına karşılık olarak ABD tarafından alınan son önlemleri tartıştılar.”
Rusya’nın Belarus’a taktik nükleer silah yerleştirme kararı
Rusya Devlet Başkanı Vladimir Putin, 25 Mart’ta, Belarus’a taktik nükleer silah yerleştireceklerini belirterek, “Bunu nükleer silahların yayılmasının önlenmesiyle ilgili uluslararası yükümlülüklerimizi ihlal etmeden yapacağız” demişti.
ABD Başkanı Joe Biden, Rusya’nın henüz bu konuda harekete geçtiğini görmediklerini belirtmiş ancak bunun endişe verici olduğunu söylemişti.

Belarus has been embroiled in a political crisis since August 2020, when President Alexander Lukashenko was re-elected in a controversial vote that saw massive protests and allegations of voter fraud. The opposition, led by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, has been demanding new elections and calling for Lukashenko to step down.
In the midst of this crisis, Turkey’s ruling party, the Justice and Development Party (AKP), has expressed its support for the opposition movement in Belarus. In a recent statement, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu reiterated Turkey’s support for the democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people and called for their voices to be heard.
The statement was issued after a meeting between Cavusoglu and Tsikhanouskaya, who has been in exile in Lithuania since the election. It is not the first time that Turkey has expressed support for the opposition in Belarus. In fact, Turkey has been a vocal critic of the Lukashenko regime and has called for free and fair elections in the country.
The Turkish government’s position on Belarus is significant, as it reflects the growing desire among some Arab countries to support democracy and human rights worldwide. In recent years, Turkey has taken steps to promote democratic values in its foreign policy, such as actively supporting the Arab Spring in 2011 and providing aid to Syrian refugees.
Moreover, Turkey’s stance on Belarus marks a clear departure from Russia’s position on the crisis. Russia has been a long-standing ally of Belarus and has supported Lukashenko throughout the crisis. This has put Turkey and Russia on opposite sides of the issue, with Turkey supporting the opposition movement and Russia backing the incumbent president.
As a result, Turkey’s support for the opposition in Belarus may have implications for its relationship with Russia. The two countries have been major players in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, and their positions on key issues have often been at odds. As Turkey becomes more openly critical of Russia’s policies, it may have to deal with the consequences of this antagonism.
Overall, Turkey’s support for the opposition in Belarus underlines its commitment to democratic values and human rights in its foreign policy. While this stance may put it at odds with Russia, Turkey’s position may attract support from other countries in the Arab world who share its democratic aspirations.
