Ali Koç and Dursun Özbek, the presidents of Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray football clubs respectively, have been referred to the Turkish Football Federation’s (TFF) disciplinary committee (PFDK) on charges of criticizing the referees and the TFF.
The decision comes after both presidents made controversial statements about the referees and the TFF during the press conferences following their teams’ controversial games. Ali Koç was particularly critical of the referees’ decisions during the Fenerbahçe-Göztepe game, which ended with a 1-1 draw. Dursun Özbek, on the other hand, criticized the TFF’s decision to allow Beşiktaş to postpone their game against Trabzonspor due to Covid-19 cases in their team.
Both clubs have issued statements expressing their dissatisfaction with the decision, calling it a violation of their freedom of speech. Fenerbahçe stated that they would appeal the decision, while Galatasaray said they would wait for the PFDK’s decision before deciding on their next steps.
This is not the first time that football club presidents in Turkey have been referred to the PFDK for criticizing referees or the TFF. In fact, it has become a common practice in Turkish football for club officials to criticize the referees and the TFF after their teams’ games. However, it is still unclear what kind of punishment Ali Koç and Dursun Özbek might face.
The incident also highlights the ongoing tensions between the clubs and the TFF, which have been exacerbated by recent scandals in Turkish football, including match-fixing and corruption allegations. Many football fans have criticized the TFF for its lack of transparency and its failure to address these issues. The decision to refer these two presidents to the PFDK is likely to further strain the already tense relationship between the clubs and the TFF.
In conclusion, the decision to refer Ali Koç and Dursun Özbek to the PFDK is yet another example of the ongoing tension and mistrust between Turkish football clubs and the TFF. It also shows how criticism of referees and the TFF has become a common practice in Turkish football, which is often met with punitive action. It remains to be seen what the outcome of the PFDK’s decision will be and whether it will have any impact on the already tense relationship between the clubs and the TFF.
