Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy recently visited the city of Malatya, which has been hit by a series of earthquakes in the past few months. The purpose of this visit was to evaluate the impact of the earthquakes on the historical structures of Malatya and to take necessary measures for their restoration and preservation.

During his visit, Minister Ersoy had an opportunity to see several historic structures that were affected by the earthquakes, including the Aslanlı Konak, the Cifte Minareli Medrese, and the İzzet Paşa Mosque. He inspected these structures carefully to determine the extent of the damage and talked to the experts involved in their restoration.

The Aslanlı Konak, which was built in the 19th century and served as the residence of the Malatya governors until 1979, suffered significant damage in the earthquakes. The earthquake-resistant reinforcement of the building was completed in April 2020. However, during Minister Ersoy’s visit, it was found that the structural safety of the building needs to be reinforced further. Therefore, it was decided that a comprehensive project would be initiated soon for its complete restoration.

The Çifte Minareli Medrese, also known as the Twin Minaret Madrasa, is one of the most famous landmarks of Malatya. This building, dating back to the 13th century, is considered as the best example of Anatolian Seljuk architecture. Minister Ersoy inspected this Madrasa and stated that it has been restored several times in the past and therefore needs a new comprehensive restoration project to address the earthquake damages.

Minister Ersoy also visited the İzzet Paşa Mosque, built during the Ottoman period, which experienced some damages to its minaret during the earthquakes. It has been decided that the mosque’s restoration work will also be initiated soon.

In conclusion, Minister Ersoy’s visit to Malatya highlights the importance of historical and cultural heritage preservation, especially in regions that are prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes. The Turkish Government’s efforts in this matter ensure that the cultural and architectural heritage of Turkey is preserved for future generations. The restoration and conservation of these historic structures not only honor our ancestors’ legacy but also support local tourism and the economy of the region.
