12 March 2023 marked the 50th anniversary of the death of famous Turkish folk musician and poet Aşık Veysel. In honor of his memory and contributions to Turkish music, the Çukurova State Symphony Orchestra (CSO) hosted a special concert.

The concert, held at the Adana Merkez Park Open-Air Theater, was attended by both locals and visitors from other parts of the country. The CSO performed a collection of Aşık Veysel’s most memorable songs, accompanied by his iconic saz, a traditional stringed instrument.

Aşık Veysel was born in Sivas in 1894 and grew up in a poor family. Despite losing his sight at the age of seven, he went on to become one of the most prominent figures in Turkish folk music. His songs, which discuss themes of love, nature, and spirituality, continue to resonate with Turkish audiences today.

The CSO’s performance paid tribute to Veysel’s influence on Turkish music by featuring some of his most famous songs, such as “Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım” and “Güzelliğin On Para Etmez.”

Many in attendance were moved by the orchestra’s rendition of these classics, with some even shedding tears. One audience member, Emine Aydın, had this to say: “I have been listening to Aşık Veysel’s music since I was a child, and hearing it played by a symphony orchestra is truly a unique and emotional experience.”

The concert was not only a celebration of Aşık Veysel’s legacy but also a showcase of the CSO’s versatility. Combining traditional Turkish music with a symphony orchestra, the performance was a testament to the orchestra’s commitment to preserving and promoting Turkish culture.

CSO conductor, Murat Göğebakan, spoke about the importance of honoring Veysel’s music: “Aşık Veysel’s work has influenced generations of Turkish musicians and has become a part of our cultural heritage. It is an honor to perform his music for this special occasion.”

The CSO’s tribute to Aşık Veysel was a fitting commemoration of the musician’s life and contributions. Through their performance, they demonstrated the continued relevance and importance of his work half a century after his passing.
