Dursun Özbek and Ahmet Nur Çebi are two prominent figures in the Turkish sports world who have recently been referred to the Turkish Football Federation’s (TFF) Professional Football Disciplinary Committee (PFDK), or in Turkish, Profesyonel Futbol Disiplin Kurulu.
Dursun Özbek is a former President of the prominent Turkish football club Galatasaray S.K, and Ahmet Nur Çebi is currently the President of the same club. The two have been referred to PFDK over their public statements regarding the TFF’s decision to resume football games despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey.
In his statement, Dursun Özbek criticized the TFF and called their decision to resume football games during the pandemic “a reckless and inhumane act”. He also accused the TFF of showing a lack of responsibility towards the health and well-being of players, staff, and spectators.
On the other hand, Ahmet Nur Çebi expressed his concerns over the health and safety of the players and the growing number of COVID-19 cases in the country. However, he stated that he would abide by the TFF’s decision to resume football games but requested additional safety measures for Galatasaray S.K.
Both Dursun Özbek and Ahmet Nur Çebi were referred to PFDK for violating Article 77 of the Turkish Football Disciplinary Regulation, which states that “players, club officials, and other individuals involved in football shall not make any statements or engage in any conduct that would harm the reputation or interests of the TFF or its affiliated organizations.”
The decision to refer the two to PFDK has sparked a controversy amongst the Turkish public, with many arguing that their statements were merely their own opinions and did not harm the reputation of the TFF. The situation has also highlighted the ongoing struggle between free speech and authority in Turkey, where criticism of governmental policies or organizations is often met with legal consequences.
While the outcome of their trial is yet to be determined, the case has drawn attention to the importance of balancing freedom of expression and responsibility in the world of sports. It also highlights the need for a thorough discussion on the role of authorities and the balance between the interests of the Turkish Football Federation and the safety and well-being of players, staff, and spectators.
