Elazığ province, located in the eastern part of Turkey, was struck by a devastating earthquake on January 24, 2020, with a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale. This natural disaster caused many damages to numerous buildings, residential areas, and public facilities, leading to the death of 41 people and injuring more than 1,600 people.
As the rescue operations and recovery efforts were underway, the affected region faced another critical challenge which was waterlogging. In the aftermath of the earthquake, heavy rainfall and floodwater entered the affected buildings, causing severe damage and disrupting the rescue operations.
The waterlogging which was a consequence of the heavy rainfall resulted in the flooding of the affected areas, making it challenging for the rescue teams to reach out to the affected people. The accumulated water also contaminated and damaged the environment, leading to further health and environmental problems.
Despite the heroic efforts of the rescue teams, the victims’ health was at risk due to exposure to various pollutants, chemicals, and sewage in the water. Moreover, the waterlogging caused the streets to become waterlogged and inaccessible, hindering the transportation of essential supplies and medical support to the victims.
To tackle this problem, the Turkish government launched a comprehensive plan to address the issue of waterlogging in Elazığ. A series of measures were initiated, including de-watering and drainage systems to siphon out the trapped water, as well as the provision of clean water supplies for the affected areas.
The authorities also designated the location of the affected areas and implemented water-testing programs to ensure safe water consumption by the residents. In addition, health camps were set up to provide medical care and relief to the affected victims.
In conclusion, the aftermath of the Elazığ earthquake and the subsequent waterlogging highlighted the importance of effective disaster management systems in addressing natural calamities. Although the road to recovery was long and arduous, the government’s efforts to provide comprehensive support to the people in the affected regions ensured that the negative effects of the disaster were duly mitigated.
