The Turkish Directorate General of Migration Management (DGMM), also known as the Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı in Turkish, recently announced that it had expelled 27,900 foreigners from the country in 2020. This number is a reflection of the Turkish government’s commitment to maintain national security and combat illegal immigration.
The Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı is an independent public institution that operates under the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Its primary objective is to manage and control migration flows in and out of Turkey, as well as to provide services to migrants and refugees within the country’s borders. The DGMM works closely with other state institutions and local governments to ensure that its policies and decisions are aligned with national interests.
The 27,900 foreigners who were deported last year were primarily from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Georgia, and Iraq. They were expelled for various reasons, including overstaying their visas, entering the country illegally, and committing crimes. The DGMM stressed that all deportations were carried out in compliance with international human rights standards and in accordance with Turkish domestic law.
The Turkish government has been facing increasing pressure to address the rising number of migrants and refugees entering the country, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Syria. However, Turkey has also been criticized for its strict immigration policies and for allegedly violating the human rights of migrants and refugees. The DGMM’s latest announcement is thus an indication of Turkey’s efforts to strike a balance between its obligations towards refugees and migrants and its responsibility to protect its citizens.
In addition to deportation, the Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı also provides services such as identification and registration of migrants, residence permit applications, and assistance in accessing health care and education. The institution has been praised for its efforts to improve the living conditions of refugees and migrants in Turkey.
Despite these efforts, the issue of immigration remains a complex and sensitive topic in Turkey. The DGMM’s work is therefore essential in ensuring that migration is managed effectively and humanely. With the number of refugees and migrants in Turkey likely to continue growing, the institution’s work will be critical in ensuring the country’s stability and security.
