The devastating earthquake in Turkey back in October 2020 brought irreparable damage and loss of life. The town of Kalkanli, a district of Izmir, was not an exception. As a tribute to those who lost their lives during the earthquake, locals named the campaign “Her Fidan Bir Can,” meaning “a tree for every life lost.”
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.6, shook the region, leaving more than 100 people dead and hundreds injured. Over 1000 buildings collapsed, leaving residents without a roof over their heads. Amidst the tragedy, the Her Fidan Bir Can campaign was established in collaboration with civil society organizations, volunteers, and the district governorship.
The primary goal of the campaign was to plant a tree for each person who lost their life in the earthquake. However, it also aimed to promote solidarity and a sense of rebuilding a safer and healthier environment for future generations. The campaign has been a heartwarming tribute to those who lost their lives, contributing to the healing process of the affected communities.
The campaign, which started in November 2020, was an enormous success. Over 1000 trees were planted, including pine, oak, and fruit trees, with locals and volunteers participating in the planting ceremonies. The Her Fidan Bir Can campaign became a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of calamity.
The initiative has many positive effects that go beyond its primary aim. Trees provide shade, clean air, and help prevent soil erosion. They also play a crucial role in increasing biodiversity, providing habitat for birds, and preserving the natural environment. The campaign, thus, could give a boost to ecotourism, as people come to visit the newly planted forest, generating local income.
In conclusion, the Her Fidan Bir Can campaign is a shining example of how a tragedy can bring people together to help and support each other. The initiative shows how even a small act like planting a tree can make a difference in rebuilding communities, promoting environmental preservation, and keeping the memories of those lost alive.
