Hong Kong, Fed’i izleyerek gösterge faiz oranını 25 baz puan artırdı

Bölgenin defakto merkez bankası niteliğindeki Hong Kong Para Otoritesinden (HKMA) yapılan açıklamada, gösterge faiz oranının 25 baz puan artışla yüzde 5,25’e çıkarıldığı bildirildi.
ABD Merkez Bankası, 22 Mart’ta, kısa dönemli politika faizini 25 baz puan artışla yüzde 4,75-5 aralığına yükseltmişti. Fed’in bu yıl aldığı ikinci faiz artırımı kararının ardından faiz oranı 16 yılın en yüksek seviyesine ulaşmıştı.
Fed, şubat ayında 25 puanlık faiz artışı gerçekleştirmiş, HKMA, Fed’in kararını izleyerek gösterge faiz oranını aynı oranda yükseltmişti.
Hong Kong bankaları artışa rağmen asgari kredi faiz oranlarını değiştirmedi. Merkez bankasının bulunmadığı özel idari bölgede para basma görevini yerine getiren üç büyük bankadan HSBC ve Bank of China, en düşük yıllık kredi faizi oranı 5,625’te, Standard Chartered ise 5,875’te tuttu.
Hong Kong’un para birimi Hong Kong dolarının 1983’te ABD doları çıpasına bağlanmasından bu yana bölge, para politikasında Fed’in adımlarını takip ediyor.

Hong Kong, one of the world’s most exciting metropolitan cities, has recently made headlines once again. The city, which is known for its impressive skyline, bustling streets and vibrant culture, has been making headlines due to a recent decision made by its central bank.
On Thursday, 7 November 2019, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) decided to increase the city’s base lending rate by 25 basis points. This decision was made after closely monitoring the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) decision to cut interest rates for the third time this year.
The base lending rate in Hong Kong is directly linked to the Fed’s federal funds rate due to the city’s currency board system. As such, the HKMA is required to adjust its base lending rate whenever the Fed changes its rates. The recent decision made by the HKMA brings Hong Kong’s base lending rate to 2.5%, in line with the Fed’s new rate of 1.5% to 1.75%.
The decision has been taken to maintain the Hong Kong dollar’s peg to the US dollar and stabilize financial markets in the city. The HKMA has stated that the decision was made after observing the Fed’s stance on the US-China trade war and global economic uncertainties. The move will help keep Hong Kong’s short-term interest rates in line with the US, ensuring that there is not an excessive outflow of capital.
Hong Kong is a popular business hub and financial center, and the decision made by the HKMA has brought stability to the city’s market. It also shows that Hong Kong remains a trusted destination for investors and businesses despite the political protests that have been taking place for several months.
In conclusion, Hong Kong’s recent decision to raise its base lending rate by 25 basis points demonstrates the city’s commitment to staying in line with the Fed’s decisions. It also provides stability to the financial market in the city and cements Hong Kong’s position as a key player in the global economy. Despite challenges, Hong Kong continues to prove its resilience and strength as a dynamic and prosperous city.
