Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched several airstrikes against Syrian military positions on Thursday, in response to earlier rocket attacks that targeted Israeli cities from Syrian territory. The IDF said on Twitter that “we hold the Syrian government responsible for all military activity in Syria” and that “we will continue to operate as necessary against the Iranian entrenchment in Syria.”
The airstrike reportedly targeted positions near the Syrian capital, Damascus, as well as areas in southern and eastern Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that at least three Syrian soldiers were killed in the attack.
The escalation in violence comes after several weeks of relative calm along the Israel-Syria border. Earlier this week, the IDF said it intercepted four rockets launched from Syria, believed to have been fired by Iranian-backed militia groups.
Israel has repeatedly stated that it will not tolerate any attacks or threats against its territory, and has launched several airstrikes against Iran-backed militia groups in Syria in recent years. The Israeli government has accused Iran of seeking to establish a military presence in Syria with the aim of attacking Israel.
The latest escalation in violence raises concerns about the potential for wider conflict in the region, particularly as tensions between Iran and Israel have been high for years. The two countries have engaged in a shadow war, with Israel reportedly carrying out covert operations against Iranian targets in Syria and Iran reportedly supporting militant groups targeting Israel.
The situation in Syria is complicated, with multiple actors involved in the conflict, including the Syrian government, rebel groups, and foreign powers like Iran, Russia and Turkey. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the displacement of millions of Syrians and left the country in ruins.
The international community has called for an end to the violence and a negotiated settlement to the Syrian conflict. However, the situation remains volatile, with sporadic clashes and airstrikes continuing to take place. The latest attack by the IDF underscores the fragility of the situation in Syria and the potential for wider conflict in the region.
