On November 9, the Turkish police launched a nationwide operation against suspected bid-rigging in public tenders. The operation, called “Ihale,” targeted companies and individuals allegedly involved in corruption schemes that affected infrastructure projects in Istanbul and other major cities.

According to the police, at least 60 people were taken into custody in Istanbul, Ankara, and several other provinces. Nine of the suspects were later arrested by the court on charges of bribery, fraud, and money laundering. Among the detainees were business owners, public officials, and individuals accused of facilitating bribery and kickback schemes.

The investigation revealed that the suspects allegedly formed a network that controlled public tenders for construction projects, including roads, bridges, hospitals, and other public facilities. The group reportedly organized pre-arranged tenders and inflated the costs of the projects to maximize their profits.

The police seized large amounts of cash, documents, and electronic devices during the operation. The authorities are now analyzing the evidence to determine the extent of the alleged corruption and identify additional individuals involved in the scheme.

The Turkish government has vowed to crack down on corruption and improve transparency in public tenders. In recent years, a series of high-profile corruption scandals have rocked the country’s political establishment, leading to the arrest and conviction of senior government officials and businessmen.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly promised to rid Turkey of corruption and organized crime, but critics argue that his government has not done enough to address the issue. The latest operation is seen as a step towards fulfilling that promise and restoring public confidence in the state’s ability to fight corruption effectively.

The “Ihale” operation serves as a reminder that the fight against corruption in Turkey is far from over. The authorities must continue to investigate and prosecute corruption cases, and implement measures to prevent future abuses in public tenders. By doing so, they can promote a fair and competitive business environment that benefits all citizens and boosts economic growth.
