The 1,600-year-old walls of Istanbul have undergone damage in recent years, with the latest issue being caused by BBQ enthusiasts.
The city’s ancient walls, which are a popular historical attraction, have recently fallen prey to rampant degradation due to human activities. Reports indicate that with the rise of barbecuing trend among locals, groups of avid cooks gather around the historic walls of Istanbul for their weekend barbecues.
This trend of barbecuing around ancient walls is not just limited to Istanbul, but to many parts of Turkey. However, it has significant consequences in terms of heritage preservation, which cannot be overlooked.
The ancient walls, which have seen many battles, invasions, and have withstood the test of time, are now starting to darken gradually due to the smoke from the barbecues. The beautiful white stones are slowly losing their glimmer, while black spots and soot slowly but surely appear on the once-clean surface.
Although barbecuing around cultural assets may seem like a fun and enjoyable activity, it results in irreparable damage to the environment and the heritage status itself. Turkey is rich in cultural and historical assets that make it an attractive tourist destination, and it is vital to preserve them for future generations.
Local authorities have taken action to curb the degradation of historical sites, imposing fines and strict regulations on those who disregard the rules. However, it also depends on the awareness and responsibility of the people. If everyone is aware of the importance of heritage preservation, there will be less damage to cultural assets.
Barbecue is an enjoyable activity, and there are plenty of places where individuals can carry out their activities without causing harm to cultural assets. One should always take into account the value of heritage status and try to protect these as treasures to keep for generations to come.
In conclusion, the degradation of Istanbul’s walls caused by BBQ enthusiasts is a significant issue and needs to be addressed to ensure the preservation of historical heritage. We must be responsible in preserving Turkey’s history and work towards creating awareness about the importance of heritage preservation.
