Istanbul, the city that bridges Europe and Asia, is known for its historic landmarks, bustling streets, and diverse culture. However, for years, the city has also seen an increase in the number of illegal constructions, known as “apartmankondu.”
“Apartmankondu” is a term that refers to buildings that are illegally constructed on land without proper planning, zoning, or permits. These structures are usually hastily built, and their construction often disregards safety regulations, resulting in poor quality buildings.
Over the past decade or so, these buildings have become a significant concern for the people of Istanbul. They often appear in neighborhoods where there is a shortage of affordable housing, and they are known to cause environmental problems, such as poor sanitation and overcrowding.
In recent years, Turkish authorities have been cracking down on businesses and individuals involved in the construction of “apartmankondu” buildings. The government’s efforts to combat illegal construction have intensified since 2018 when the government launched a nationwide campaign to demolish them.
The move forms part of an effort to improve building safety and reduce the risk of disasters such as the fatal collapse of a seven-story building that happened in Istanbul’s Kartal district in 2019, killing 21 people.
The “apartmankondu” issue has been a contentious one, with many people opposing the government’s efforts to demolish them. Some argue that the government’s decision is a threat to the livelihoods of the families living in these buildings, while others argue that these buildings are a significant danger to public safety.
However, Istanbul residents appear to support the ongoing demolition of these structures. Many are pleased with the government’s action, which is seen as a way of restoring the city’s architectural heritage and making Istanbul a safer place to live.
The Turkish government’s commitment to demolish these buildings is a positive move to address the problem of illegal and dangerous constructions that have been a long-standing issue in Istanbul. While the demolition of these buildings will impact the people who live in them, it is a necessary step to ensure the safety of the city’s residents.
As the city continues to grow and develop, it is crucial to ensure that construction follows proper guidelines and regulations to preserve Istanbul’s beauty and stability. With the continued effort and cooperation of residents and authorities, Istanbul can continue to thrive as one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world.
