On Tuesday, November 10th, the Turkish Coast Guard rescued 154 migrants off the coast of Izmir, a port city on the Aegean Sea. The group of people included women and children who were attempting to cross illegally into Greece.
According to the Turkish authorities, the migrants were caught in two separate incidents in the Dikili and Cesme coastal areas. It is said that the boats carrying these illegal migrants were bound for the Lesbos and Chios islands in Greece.
The Turkish Coast Guard, who have been conducting intense patrols along the coastline to prevent illegal migration, managed to intercept these boats and rescue the migrants on board. All the migrants were found to be in good condition and were taken into custody for further legal proceedings.
This rescue operation is yet another reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region. Despite the efforts of the Turkish authorities to deter illegal migration, people continue to take the risk and put their lives in danger to seek a better future in Europe.
The Aegean Sea, which separates Turkey from Greece, has become a popular route for migrants making their way to Europe. However, the journey is full of risks, as many have lost their lives while attempting to cross the narrow sea channel.
Turkey has been hosting over four million refugees and migrants, mainly from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Despite the financial and social burden this has placed on the country, Turkey continues to maintain an open-door policy towards refugees and has been providing them with essential services such as healthcare and education.
As the crisis continues to unfold, more cooperation and support from the international community are necessary to address the root causes of migration and provide a sustainable solution for those who have fled their homes in search of safety and peace.
