On December 25, 2019, Turkish authorities carried out an operation in Izmir against the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), resulting in the arrest of 30 people.

The operation targeted individuals with alleged links to FETÖ, which was behind the failed July 15, 2016 coup attempt in Turkey. The group is believed to have infiltrated Turkey’s government, judiciary, military, and educational institutions for decades.

According to the official statement, the suspects arrested were all members of FETÖ, and their roles ranged from being financial supporters of the group to being its operatives in various public institutions.

The operation was carried out by the Izmir Provincial Security Directorate in cooperation with the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Since the failed coup attempt, Turkey has carried out numerous operations against FETÖ members, resulting in the detention and arrest of tens of thousands of people.

However, FETÖ remains a significant threat to Turkey’s democracy, as the group continues to maintain a vast network in the country and abroad. Therefore, the Turkish government remains determined to root out the group.

The Izmir operation is just the latest in a series of efforts to eliminate the group’s influence. Turkey’s fight against FETÖ is not limited to its borders. The government has been actively trying to bring members living abroad to justice by requesting their extradition.

Despite international criticism, Turkey’s government remains resolute in its fight against FETÖ, as the group is seen as a clear and present danger to Turkey’s sovereignty and democracy.

In conclusion, the recent FETÖ operation in Izmir is a testament to Turkey’s commitment to fighting terrorism and ensuring that its democratic institutions remain free from nefarious influence. The government and security forces must continue to work together to eliminate this threat and ensure the safety and security of Turkish citizens.
