On Monday, the 13th of December, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, faced a terrifying ordeal when his convoy was attacked by a group of protesters in the capital city of Lefkosa.

The attack, which took place outside the presidential palace, left several cars damaged and saw one of the president’s security detail injured. The protesters, who were waving the flags of the Greek-Cypriot administration, also threw rocks and eggs at the presidential motorcade.

Despite being shaken by the incident, President Tatar pledged to stay the course, saying, “We will continue on our path unmoved, without any hesitation.”

The cause of the protest is believed to be related to Tatar’s stance on the ongoing conflict between the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities on the island. Tatar, a staunch supporter of the TRNC, has advocated for a two-state solution, much to the chagrin of the Greek-Cypriot administration, which maintains that the island should be reunified under a federal system.

The attack on Tatar’s convoy has been roundly condemned by political leaders in both the TRNC and Turkey. TRNC Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kudret Ozersay, tweeted that the attack was an assault on the democratic process, while Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu decried the incident as a “cowardly” act.

The Greek-Cypriot administration also issued a statement condemning the attack but stopped short of apologizing for the actions of the protesters.

The incident is a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions that exist on the island of Cyprus. Since the Turkish invasion of 1974, the island has been divided into a Greek-Cypriot controlled south and a Turkish-Cypriot controlled north. Attempts at reunification have failed, and the island remains one of the most heavily militarized regions in Europe.

Despite the challenges, President Tatar remains committed to finding a solution. In a speech delivered after the attack, he stated, “Our aim is to find a fair and peaceful solution. We still believe that a positive outcome is possible if all sides show goodwill and sit at the negotiating table.”

While the attack on Tatar’s convoy is a setback, it is important that all sides on the island remember that peace can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiation, not violence. The incident serves as a reminder that the wounds of the past are still raw, and that much work remains to be done if Cyprus is to achieve a lasting peace.
