The Minister of National Education of Turkey, Ziya Selçuk, has announced that the educational process in four provinces in Turkey will begin in phases due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The announcement was made on May 11th, 2020, by the Minister during a press conference.

Minister Selçuk shared that the new academic year would commence on August 31st, 2020, and that the schools in four provinces; Kütahya, Şanlıurfa, Van, and Çanakkale, will have a staggered start due to the pandemic. This staggered start will support the social distancing required to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Minister also shared that the schools in these provinces will start the educational process with grades 12 and 8 initially. Following the gradual opening of schools, lower grades would begin their educational processes subsequently, with the time allotted for each grade being extended as the process continues.

During his announcement, The Minister of National Education emphasized that the decisions were taken after receiving the advice of the Coronavirus Scientific Advisory Board, and in conjunction with the Ministry of Health. Minister Selçuk also stated that these educational processes would be implemented with utmost care to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and parents.

The measures that will be taken to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and parents include alterations to the schoolyards, classrooms, halls, and cafeterias. The Ministry of National Education has shared the necessary guidelines for schools to ensure that these measures are taken for their safety, with the physical and administrative arrangements of schools reviewed.

Overall, this decision is intended to protect the community and ensure that the education system in Turkey continues without disruption. The Ministry of National Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, have put together guidelines to ensure that the affected provinces can gradually return to a sense of normalcy while remaining safe from the pandemic.

The Ministry of National Education has encouraged parents, teachers, and students to cooperate to ensure that this process is successful. They have also stated that future decisions regarding the educational process will be based on evaluations of the current state of the pandemic, and that they will keep updating the public about any further decisions in the future.

In conclusion, although these delayed and cautiously staggered opening of schools might not be above expectation, the safety of the students, teachers, and the community as a whole remains the top priority. The Ministry of National Education has shown a great deal of guidance and transparency in making these decisions and working with the Ministry of Health to find ways to ensure that education is conducted safely during the pandemic.
