Sultanahmet Camii is one of the most iconic landmarks of Istanbul, Turkey. It is frequented by locals and tourists alike, who come to admire its stunning architecture and revel in its serene atmosphere. However, on the night of October 30, 2020, the lights of this magnificent mosque were switched off for a heartbreaking reason.

In the early hours of October 30, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Aegean region of Turkey, leaving behind a trail of destruction and devastation. Izmir, the third-largest city in Turkey, was hit the hardest, with buildings collapsing, people trapped under debris, and a death toll that rose to 114. Among the victims were several children and their families who were buried under the rubble of their homes.

The earthquake sent shockwaves throughout Turkey and beyond, as people tried to come to terms with the loss of life and property. As a sign of respect and mourning for the victims of the earthquake, the lights of Sultanahmet Camii were turned off. The mosque, which is usually lit up at night, appeared dark and somber, reflecting the collective grief of the nation.

The decision to turn off the lights of Sultanahmet Camii was not just symbolic but also significant. It showed that the mosque, which is a symbol of faith and unity for millions of Muslims worldwide, stands in solidarity with the victims of the earthquake and their families. It was an acknowledgment of the pain and suffering that they were going through and a reminder that they were not alone in their grief.

The gesture of turning off the lights of Sultanahmet Camii also had a wider message. It was a call to all of us to come together in times of crisis and support each other, regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs. It was a reminder that we are all part of one humanity and that our actions and choices can have a profound impact on those around us.

The earthquake in Turkey was a tragedy, but it also brought out the best in people. From the first responders who risked their lives to save others to the volunteers who helped with the rescue efforts, people came together to offer their support and compassion. The decision to turn off the lights of Sultanahmet Camii was a small but significant part of this larger human response.

In conclusion, the switching off of the lights of Sultanahmet Camii was a poignant moment in Turkey’s history. It was a powerful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of coming together in times of need. It was a tribute to the victims of the earthquake and their families and a message of hope and unity for all of us.
